Cheddar cheese holds 23.3g of protein per 100g. Lowfat Greek yogurt holds 9.95g. On that basis cheddar wins by 134%, and it is the reason cheese sits on every "high-protein food" list ever written.
Divide both by their calories and the result inverts: Greek yogurt returns 13.6g of protein per 100 calories against cheddar's 5.7g — yogurt by 139%. Same two USDA rows, same arithmetic, opposite answer (FDC 328637 and FDC 170903). Nothing about the foods changed. Only the denominator did.
We ranked all 22 Dairy and Egg Products in our database both ways. The two orderings barely resemble each other, and ten of the eleven cheeses in the set lose ground when you switch from grams to calories — cheddar by ten places, parmesan by nine. The eleventh is the exception that explains the whole pattern.

The cheese collapse is the real story
Read the cheese rows against the final column. Parmesan goes 2nd to 11th, cheddar 4th to 14th, swiss 3rd to 10th, blue 6th to 13th, feta 9th to 16th. Three of them — feta, ricotta and cream cheese — end up below plain whole-milk yogurt, a food carrying between a half and a sixth of their protein per 100g.
The mechanism is fat, and it is not subtle. Cheddar is 34g of fat per 100g against Greek yogurt's 1.92g (FDC 328637, FDC 170903). Fat carries roughly nine calories per gram to protein's four, so a food that is a third fat by weight spends most of its calorie budget on something that is not protein. Cheese is a protein food in the sense that it contains a lot of protein. It is not a protein food in the sense of being an efficient way to buy protein.
Which is exactly why lowfat cottage cheese goes the other way, climbing from 11th per 100g to 3rd per calorie. It is the only cheese in the set that is not mostly fat — 1.02g per 100g, against 21g to 34g for every cheese above it on the weight ranking (FDC 173417). Strip the fat out of a cheese and it behaves like yogurt. Leave it in and the division punishes it. One food moving against the trend for the same stated reason is better evidence for the mechanism than the ten moving with it.
Butter is the limit case, and it is last on both bases: 0.85g of protein per 100g and 0.1g per 100 calories. That is not a rounding error in a dairy food. It is a fat with a trace of protein in it, and set against cottage cheese the per-calorie gap runs to 172 times.
About that top row — how much to trust it
Egg whites finish first at 21.0g per 100 calories and whey protein powder second at 20.5g. We are not going to tell you egg whites beat whey. The gap is 2.4%, and it is smaller than the uncertainty sitting under either row.
The whey figure comes from a single generic USDA row for whey-based protein powder (FDC 173180). Commercial powders vary from roughly 70% to 90% protein by weight depending on whether they are concentrate or isolate and how much they are flavoured and bulked, which moves the per-calorie figure by considerably more than 2.4% in either direction. Buy an isolate and it very likely beats egg whites; buy a sweetened concentrate and it very likely does not. Our data holds one row and cannot tell you which you have.
The honest version of the headline is therefore the weaker and more useful one: egg whites and whey powder are the joint leaders at about 21g of protein per 100 calories, and the third-place food, lowfat cottage cheese at 17.2g, is a real distance behind both. That ordering is robust. The first-versus-second is not, and a ranking that pretends otherwise is inventing precision it does not have.
Whole eggs versus whites, which the same division settles
A whole raw egg carries 12.6g of protein per 100g and raw egg white 10.9g, so the whole egg looks slightly ahead (FDC 171287, FDC 172183). Per calorie it is not close: 8.8g against 21.0g, a 2.4-fold gap, because the yolk brings 9.51g of fat per 100g and the white brings 0.17g.
This is emphatically not an argument for throwing yolks away — the yolk holds the choline, the fat-soluble vitamins and most of what makes an egg worth eating, none of which is in our macro columns. The full comparison is here. It is an argument that if your specific problem is hitting a protein number inside a calorie budget, the white is the part doing that job.
Which basis should you use?
Per 100g answers "how concentrated is this food?" — useful when the limit is how much you can physically eat, which is a real constraint if you are trying to gain weight or feeding someone with a small appetite. Per 100 calories answers "what does this protein cost me?" — the relevant question whenever calories are the thing in short supply.
Most people asking about high-protein dairy are on the second question and being sold answers to the first. If you are eating to a target, the useful shortlist out of these 22 rows is short: egg whites, whey powder, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt, then skim milk and kefir. Cheese is a flavour you spend calories on, not a protein source you build a day around.
Limits worth stating
These 22 rows are the dairy and egg foods our database holds, not every dairy food that exists — there is no skyr, no quark, no part-skim mozzarella and no full-fat 4% cottage cheese here, and several of those would place well. The cottage cheese row is specifically the lowfat 1% product; the 4% version is a different food with markedly different numbers.
Every figure is the raw USDA row for the food as sold. And protein quality — amino acid profile, digestibility — is not in these columns at all. Dairy and egg protein both score near the top on those measures, so the ranking is not distorted much within this particular group, but it would be if you extended it across plant foods.
Which leaves the part no table solves. Knowing cottage cheese pays 17.2g per 100 calories is worth nothing unless you know what you have already eaten today, and that is the number people lose track of by Wednesday.
