Why I Built a Nutrition Coach That Lives in WhatsApp

I got tired of the same cycle: download a tracking app, log meals for three days, get annoyed, quit. So I built something different.

I built Sunn because I got tired of the same cycle. Download a tracking app. Log meals for three days. Get annoyed by the database search. Stop logging. Feel guilty. Repeat in January.

The nutrition science wasn't the hard part — I knew roughly what to eat. The hard part was doing it consistently. Every app wanted me to change my behavior to fit their system. Open their app. Search their database. Scan barcodes. Weigh portions. That's a lot of friction for something that should be as simple as telling a friend what you had for lunch.

So I asked: what if the system adapted to you instead?

Why WhatsApp?

You already check WhatsApp dozens of times a day. You already text friends. You already send photos. There's no new app to download, no new habit to build, no login to remember.

This sounds like a small thing, but it's actually the whole thing. The best nutrition plan is the one you follow. And the easiest plan to follow is one that lives where you already are.

Logging a meal on Sunn feels like sending a text — because it literally is one.

What Happens When You Text Sunn

1

Send a photo or text

Snap a photo of your plate. Or just type "2 eggs, toast with avocado, and a coffee with oat milk." Natural language, not database codes.

2

Get instant analysis

Sunn identifies the food, estimates portions, and sends back your calories and macros within seconds. No searching. No scanning. No "did you mean Chicken Breast (Grilled, Boneless, USDA Entry #47)?"

3

Get coached, not just tracked

This is where Sunn is different from a calorie counter. If you're low on protein at dinner, Sunn suggests what to eat — not just that you should eat more protein. If you had a rough day, Sunn helps you move forward instead of making you feel guilty.

A Coach, Not a Calculator

Most nutrition apps are glorified spreadsheets. You put data in, you see numbers out. There's no one on the other side to say "hey, you've only had 40g of protein today — want me to suggest a dinner that closes the gap?"

Sunn acts more like a knowledgeable friend who checks in on you. Here's what that looks like in practice:

Morning check-in

"Good morning! Yesterday you hit 142g protein — right on target. Today's a new day. What's the plan for breakfast?"

After a rough meal

"Half a pizza is not a disaster — let me log it. You're at 1,850 cal today. That's only slightly over target. Tomorrow's a fresh start. The fact that you told me means you're still in control."

Evening summary

"Today: 1,720 cal · 138g protein · 180g carbs · 58g fat. Protein was solid, and you're right on your calorie target. Nice work."

Notice what's missing from those messages: guilt, shame, and judgment. If you had a bad day, Sunn helps you move forward. If you had a great day, it celebrates the specific thing you did well. Consistency over perfection. Always.

How It All Starts

The whole thing begins with a 60-second quiz. You tell Sunn your age, height, weight, activity level, goals, and food preferences. From that, it calculates your calorie target and macro split — personalized to you, not pulled from a generic template.

Then you add Sunn on WhatsApp and start texting. That's it. No onboarding tutorial. No feature tour. No 47-step setup wizard. Just start telling it what you eat.

What You Get

  • Personalized calorie and macro targets — based on your body, your goals, and how active you actually are
  • AI food analysis from photos — snap, send, done
  • Natural language tracking — type "oatmeal with banana and peanut butter" and it just works
  • Morning check-ins — a gentle nudge to start your day with intention
  • Evening summaries — see exactly where you landed, no spreadsheet required
  • Weekly pattern reviews — what's working, what's not, and what to try next week
  • A web dashboard — for when you want to see the bigger picture, trends, and your full history

The Tools Are Free

Even without signing up, you can use everything we've built for the web:

Who It's For

Sunn isn't for bodybuilders who weigh their rice on a scale. (Those people already have a system that works.) It's for everyone else — the people who want to eat better, lose some weight, or get more protein, but don't want nutrition to become a second job.

If you've tried tracking before and quit because it was too tedious, Sunn is built for you. If you've never tracked and don't know where to start, Sunn is built for you. If you just want someone to tell you "you're doing fine, here's what to eat for dinner" — that's literally what Sunn does.
